Rehab update for Friday 8/7
Well, that didn't take long! Dad will be discharged Tuesday at noon. His next step is outpatient rehab at Grand View 2-3 times a week.

Rehab update for Thursday 8/6
Dad had another good day today. The staff realized he was in much better shape than they originally expected. They started giving him occupational lessons for his limitations, such as how to take a shower. On Saturday they will start filing discharge paperwork, for a probable release next week although that is not certain. He had a couple of visitors, including granddaughter Cassidy who gave him a big hug.

Rehab update for Wednesday 8/5
Today Dad was very energetic and glad to be wearing his own clothes. Because of his head trauma, he was sent to the brain ward of the rehab center, but after his performance in some puzzle games it was quite apparent he was too well for that ward. The staff can't believe how good he is looking. He pedaled the handbike as fast as the nurses had ever seen. He is able to get out of bed on his own and can almost get back in on his own. With his recovery progressing at this rate, he could be discharged in as little as one week.

Home again, home again!
Home again, home again, nothing feels as good as home again! I arrived home late Tuesday and so did Mom. Looking forward to when Dad does too! I added new pictures, of Dad without stitches as well as the waiting room jigsaw puzzle that tormented Mom and I.

We're coming home! (#2)
Travel plans are confirmed. Mom and Dad are leaving via air ambulance at approximately noon on Tuesday and flying into Queen City Airport in Allentown. From there, a short ambulance ride to Good Shepherd Rehab. Early in the morning he'll have one more followup appointment with the eye surgeon, including getting his facial stitches removed. My flight to Raleigh via Philly leaves at 6pm and gets in at midnight. Therefore, there may not be an update tomorrow, but you can rejoice in our good news instead!

We're coming home!
Our care coordinator told us that Dad will be taking an air ambulance trip sometime tomorrow (Tuesday). We're not sure exactly what time it will be but should find out sometime this afternoon -- check here for updates. Further good news is that things are going well with insurance.

Accident update for Sunday 8/2
No news is good news, in the sense that Dad's recovery is stable and there are no new developments there. No update on our departure time yet. We will get to the hospital early Monday AM and expect there to be a lot of activity between the hospital care coordinators and insurance. Our bags are packed, we're ready to go, now we just need the final OKs! We may leave on Monday, but we expect Monday to be a day of coordination and Tuesday to be the day of departure.

Accident update for Saturday 8/1
Yesterday Dad had a grueling but successful one hour rehab session and he celebrated with a quality nap. Later in the day he was able to call his granddaughter Sadie and wish/sing her a happy first birthday. This morning he had a routine ultrasound to search for new blood clots and thankfully none were discovered. He also enjoyed a morning phone call from granddaughter Cassidy - see the Photos section at Caring Bridge.

Accident update for Friday 7/31
The family thanks you for your prayers - the bilirubin levels are going back down. Medically, Dad is ready to be discharged. The limiting factor is how/when he can be transported and admitted into a PA rehab center. Also, he was so glad to get a shave this morning (see the pictures)!

Accident update for Thursday 7/30

Big news first - the neck collar is off! The x-rays came back negative and he no longer needs to wear any neck collar. Rehab continues to go well and his famous appetite is returning. The psych team interviewed him today and said for their part, they are ready to release him.

One of the few things the doctors are still watching is his bilirubin level, which is an excretion from the liver. The level is elevated but declining. They have been running tests but have not definitively pinpointed the cause, however the situation is improving and the medical staff is not worried. One possible cause that has been ruled out is a gall bladder problem. We are looking forward to hearing about discharge, which feels like it should only be a few days away.
