Accident update for Thursday 7/23 (PM)
Lots of family arrived from Pennsylvania this afternoon. Dad's parents and brother Dan came up, as well as Mom's parents and her sister Donna. Dad was glad to see these extra visitors! He was joking with all of us the whole time. He told us that he was visited by the Queen of England. When the nurse came in we realized she had a British accent -- so she is his Queen!

Accident update for Thursday 7/23 (AM)
We visited Dad this morning and he was feeling very good. The nurses asked us with surprise if he was always this pleasant -- usually patients wake up a little upset. He was glad to see us and very talkative. He was so grateful to everyone who helped him and was waxing philosophical. He was so glad to hear about all the people who prayed for him and was working on a mental checklist of all the people he wanted to thank. We would also like to thank everyone who is thinking of him and praying for him.

Dad's hip surgery update #3
We briefly visited Dad after his surgery, around 10pm tonight. He was sleeping soundly and peacefully.

Dad's hip surgery update #2 (surgery complete)
Dad's nine hour surgery was a success! The surgeon said that the fundamental structure of the hip is repaired. It is unlikely Dad will need further surgical repairs, but that if he would, there is a solid foundation in place. Dad will spend the night in post-op recovery. It was a long and hard surgery for him; he received a couple of blood transfusions and a lot of IV fluid, so he may be pretty sedated tonight. At this point we are not sure if we will be allowed to visit him tonight. We will post another update when we find out.

Dad's hip surgery update

Dad went into surgery approximately 9:30 AM this morning. The surgeon told us Dad's hip injuries were as bad as it gets, with major breaks on the front and back parts of the hip socket. There will be two major incisions, one each for the front and back repairs. The surgery will last a minimum of 5 hours and could go up to 12. We asked for an update at the halfway point (after the front or back is done), and will post details if we get it. One bit of good news is that Dad has the best ortho surgeon in Maine doing the surgery.

Last night, Dad called us back into his room when we were leaving. He asked us to put him at the top of the list for surgery. It turns out that his surgery was in fact the first of the day today. So this morning we told him we did as he asked and he laughed and laughed. He was in very good spirits this morning, talking with us and saying how great all the hospital help was. He gave Mom a kiss before we left.

Accident update for Tuesday 7/21

Hooray! Mom was discharged today. She was thrilled to put on real clothing and go out to eat real food.

Dad's surgery is finally scheduled for tomorrow. He was less agitated and more peaceful today when we visited him. Both visits ended with him kissing Mom on the hand.

Accident update for Monday 7/20 (PM #3)

Dad was very agitated during our visit tonight, asking to take off his neck collar and get out of the bed. It was disheartening to see but we are remembering that he had a very good day. We really hope his pelvis surgery happens tomorrow and invite your prayers for the same. We'll find out tomorrow if he is going into surgery.

Mom is doing very well on her walks and was able to stand 10-15 minute phone call with her cousin Patsy.

Accident update for Monday 7/20 (PM #2)

We just spoke with Dad's eye surgeon. The eye surgery is scheduled for Friday (pelvis surgery still likely Tuesday). The surgeon has 10+ years of experience doing eye surgeries and will be assisted by a great plastic surgeon named Aurora (also Cassidy's middle name - a great sign!).

The surgery will start with a small incision below the left eye. Most of the damage is below the eye, including broken bones, and the repairs will be focused there. The bones around the nose will likely be left to heal on their own. Dad will wear a titanium contact lens to protect his eye during the surgery.

Dad is off of the automatic pain drip and is able to use the manual pain drip button with prompting. He only pressed the button once since our visit four hours ago. He was sleeping soundly when we visited him. Mom was able to walk up to his room, with a short sit in the elevator.

Accident update for Monday 7/20 (AM)

Mom had her IV, patient control analgesia (pain drip), and epidural tubes removed this morning and was glad to be able to move more freely. The catheter should come out this afternoon and she can have her long-awaited shower!

Dad was the most awake we have seen him since the accident. He did not seem terribly achy or restless. He was awake and talking with us for about 15 minutes. He was able to speak briefly with his mother by cell phone. His facial injuries are healing and his swelling is going down. After holding hands with Mom for several minutes, he politely asked her to let go see he could stretch his arms and take a rest.
