ESPN interviews the candidates

I saw the highlights of ESPN's interviews with the presidential candidates last night and I thought the answers to one question were pretty funny. The question: "What's the one thing you would do to improve sports today?"

Barack Obama: "I'd have a real playoff for college football"

John McCain: "I'd eliminate the use of performance-enhancing drugs"

Who'da thunk it? Barack goes with a populist message and McCain goes with an unwinnable war!

Soccer video
I suspect trickeration, but this is a pretty cool soccer video anyway!

Successful race
This weekend I participated in the IBM 5K road race with two goals: no knee pain and don't finish last. I was able to accomplish both goals, and even ran a better time than expected (27:54) though nothing spectacular. I've decided to try again in Parkersburg in three weeks in a local Turkey Trot 5K. It's nice to be out running again, even if its not very often!

Men's soccer: Regular season winding down
Last night we played the #1 ranked team in our league (surprisingly, not our nemesis the Lions). They dominated the first half and parts of the second, taking a 1-0 lead into halftime. With one minute remaining we scored the tying goal. This game solidifies our #5 rank (out of seven). We have one game remaining, against the #6 team. We need to win that one to avoid a brutal first round matchup against a top-3 team!

Co-ed soccer: Playoffs
It was do-or-die time for Yuengling Light, and we showed ourselves to be a strong second half team. Unfortunately we gave up the winning goal in the first half, ultimately losing 3-0 despite a few opportunities to make it closer. This playoff loss concludes our underachieving but still fun season. We'll be back next year!

Men's soccer: Playing our nemesis

I wanted to title this entry "Playing our rivals", but to have a rivalry both sides need to occasionally win. The Lions have beaten our Yuengling team every time in my six years with the team, often twice per year. Thursday night we brought one of our strongest Yuengling teams, and the Lions had some recent struggles. Would this be the night we made history?

No! The game was an offensive onslaught from the Lions. Our defense played spectacularly and only gave up one goal. We didn't get enough chances offensively and lost 1-0. It was my best and our best game of the season. I thanked the Lions for always bringing out the best in our group. They win with class and I tip my hat to them. Someday I hope we beat them, and if so it would be the greatest athletic achievement of my time. Since I'm a Philadelphia Eagles fan I'm used to saying "Maybe next year!"

Co-ed soccer: On a roll?
In a back and forth effort, we repeated last week's effort of a 3-3 tie sealed with a tying goal in the last minute. What are we, the Comeback Kids now? It's good to go into the playoffs on a non-losing streak and playing our best soccer of the season. My favorite highlight from last night was running down a ball that bounced over our goalkeeper and punting it from the field before it went into the goal. Glad I connected on it this week after missing the same play last week!

Co-ed soccer: Losing streak snapped!
In a back and forth effort, we managed to escape with a 3-3 tie. I added my second goal of the season with about two minutes left to knot things up. In typical Yuengling fashion, we are playing stronger in the second half of the season than the first. What will the playoffs hold?
