Soccer: A real WTF (Why the forfeit)

I think this was the first time we've ever had to forfeit a game ... how disappointing! Ten people said they'd come but only five showed up. At least we were able to scrimmage with the other team instead. I had a decent scrimmage in goal, then ironically played a second game for another team who had to forfeit. My best two games in goal all season and neither counted!

In what may be a Yuengling first, our co-ed soccer team has a winning record of 2-1-1 after last night's victory. We won 3-1 in a game we dominated from start to finish. I was pleased to add a goal and an assist!

Tonight we played defending CoRec champ Tina Come Get Some Ham. They had often beat us soundly over the years, do to the strength of their best player. We dusted off the box-and-one defense for this game and played it well, yielding only one goal to their star. We scored two in the first half. They had a furious rally at the end, including a great shot as time expired, but we pulled out the biggest win in our franchise history!

We played a tough opponent tonight, one of the recent champions, and we gave them a good game. If it wasn't for the first and last five minutes we would have shut them out! But those minutes count too - we lost 2-0.

Year-end softball stats

For some reason I enjoy compiling these at the end of the year. I had a welcome return to power after slumping for two years. 19-28 (2 2B, 3B, 3 HR, not counting 4BB) with 19 R and 15 RBI. Batting average: .679, on-base percentage: 0.719, slugging percentage: 1.143 and OPS of 1.862. I'll take it! Also had a great year in the field, even throwing out a couple of runners!

It's generally not good to start a playoff game by giving up 10 runs in the top of the first, and if you answer that first inning by scoring only 1 run that's not going to help much either. The only positive was that the beating was swift, so I was able to leave in time to get to my soccer game. My line: 1-2, R, RBI.

I forgot to write about last week... a rain-shortened game that ended in a 4-4 tie after five innings. I did enjoy throwing a runner out at third... that always feels good! My line: 1-3.

The game tonight was not nearly as good. After a 16-run 2nd inning, we were just waiting for the mercy rule! I was fortunate enough to hit a homerun (inside-the-park, of course) to the right-center gap, and have a nice diving catch, even if it was a 24-5 loss. My line: 3-3, HR, 2R, RBI.

Two spectacular diving catches in left field (I won't be complaining any more about the humidity, after it kept those balls hanging in the air for me!)
