When Bugs Byte Back -- Computer Viruses

Fixing A Computer Virus

It is important to remember to check antivirus websites for virus solutions first, since they are the experts. Symantec and McAfee both post quality virus removal instructions, and sometimes downloadable fixes on their websites. If these sites don’t help you, there are a few manual tools you can try on your own.

Safe Mode allows you to delete files that you might not have been able to delete in Normal Mode. If you know what file is acting like a virus, go to Safe Mode and delete it.

The System Configuration Editor shows you your system files. You can check to see if any viruses are hiding in suspicious looking “run=” and “load=” lines.

The System Configuration Utility gives you a graphical look at what applications are running when you start your computer. If something looks out of place, it probably is a virus – disable it!

The Registry Editor allows you to look at your central Windows database, where information on all of your applications is stored. Viruses like to infect the area that tells Windows what to do when it runs an application (<HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command>).
