When Bugs Byte Back -- Computer Viruses

How to Detect an Infection

The key to preventing a virus attack is vigilance.

A computer user should stay updated with the latest virus news by reading newspapers and watching the news for the most immediate threats, but also peruse sites such as http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/. Check out their virus encyclopedia for entries on every known virus, and their calendar to see when the next virus attack is scheduled to occur. This information will show you how to avoid an attack by inspecting the subject, the contents, or the attachments.
Even if you don’t do this, there are ways to detect if a computer has a virus. The easiest of which is your virus detect software telling you about a virus lurking on your computer. If your virus protection is old, or if you don’t have any, there are still ways to sense a virus. If the computer takes longer than normal to perform functions, if it starts to place odd graphics on your screen, or if your internet connection slows down for no apparent reason, it is not excessive to suspect a virus.
