When Bugs Byte Back -- Computer Viruses

Avoiding Computer Viruses

There are several ways to protect one’s computer from obtaining a virus.

The simplest way to do this is to purchase virus detection software. Such software is designed to search your system for viruses, and clean the computer when viruses are found. The software can also search incoming information for viruses, and warn the user when the incoming information is dirty or infected.
Another form of protection is to pay attention to the electronic mail one receives. When receiving mail from an unknown sender, be wary, for it may be a virus. Also, pay attention to the subject line of the mail. If the subject line includes key words like “IMPORTANT”, “DIRE”, or “OPEN IMMEDIATELY”, one should be extremely cautious about opening the mail.
Finally, when visiting websites, one should pay attention to the reputation of the site. If the site’s editor or sponsor is not clear, then the information on the site may not be very safe. Also, if the sight says that it cannot verify any of the downloadable objects, these objects may be infected. So, to be safe, one must be very cautious when it comes to downloading material. If one follows these guidelines, then the chances of receiving a virus are quite slim.
