Applets readme

Thank you for downloading my discrete math teaching applets. You may find that these applets help you (or your students) understand some principles in discrete math. These applets were developed to be used with a Discrete Mathematics course at Penn State. The course resource website is at acs.ist.psu.edu/courses/ist230/.

Each applet is open-source, free as-is. You are free to tinker with them as you wish, but please do not distribute without giving proper credit to the author. You will also notice that each applet comes with some questions designed to enhance understanding of the current concept. These might make good homework exercises.

This package contains the following applets:

  • Basic Set Applet - Set theory exercises using sets of numbers.
  • Blackjack Applet - Probability theory tied to a popular card game.
  • Factorizer Applet - Factors numbers into prime components.
  • Fitts Law Applet - Fitt's Law is used to measure the time it takes to move a mouse to a target, given the distance to the target and the size of the target.
  • Pascal's Triangle Applet - This applet produces a given row of Pascal's Triangle.
  • Peter's Problem Applet - An interesting problem on many levels, tied to graph theory among other things. Peter's task is to install x machines into x Unimarts in the shortest time possible. He can install units himself, train others to install them, or train other trainers. What is Peter's optimal course of action?

The author can be reached via email at arfreed@nc.rr.com. Please send problems, complains, or most importantly, success stories!
